Hay Fever

About hay fever

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen from grasses, weeds or trees, and also possibly tomoulds that are carried in the air, usually during the spring and summer. These plants andmoulds produce allergens – substances that can cause an allergic reaction.
An allergic reaction happens when your body’s immune system reacts to an allergenbecause it mistakes it for a harmful invader, such as a virus. Hay fever is the result of yourimmune system overreacting to pollen allergens, which are harmless to most people.
Hay fever, which is also called allergic rhinitis, is a common allergic condition. A mainfeature of the condition is an inflammation of the nasal passages, or rhinitis, caused by anallergic reaction to pollen. Hay fever usually occurs when airborne plant pollens are at theirhighest levels in the spring, summer, and early fall

Symptoms of hay fever

If you have hay fever, you may have symptoms including:

  • sneezing
  • a blocked or runny nose (rhinitis)
  • itchy eyes, nose, throat and roof of your mouth (palate)
  • headaches
  • Running nose
  • Watery eyes
  • Head congestion
  • Ear pressure
  • Nasal discharge

These symptoms can make it difficult for you to concentrate or sleep properly. In somepeople, pollen may also trigger asthma.
If you have hay fever symptoms all year round, you may also be allergic to house dust mites, pet hair and moulds. This is called perennial or persistent allergic rhinitis.

Causes of hay fever

If you have hay fever, your body produces immunoglobulin when you come into contactwith pollen or the spores of moulds or fungi. Antibodies are usually only released to fightinfection, but with hay fever your body believes the pollen is harmful. This antibody triggersthe release of chemicals from certain cells in your nose, throat and eyes. One of thesechemicals is histamine, which sets off the symptoms of hay fever.

You may be allergic to one or more types of pollen – this will determine when your symptoms are most severe. Some possible causes are listed below.

Grass pollen – up to nine out of 10 people in the UK who have hay fever are allergic tograss pollen.

Tree pollen – different trees produce pollen at different times of the year and one in fourpeople in the UK with hay fever is allergic to birch tree pollen.

Risk factors for hay fever

Family members with hay fever

Repeated exposure to the allergen

Other allergic conditions such as eczema or asthma

Nasal polyps (small no cancerous growths in the lining of the nose)

Preventing hay fever

It is very difficult to completely avoid pollen or spores. However, reducing your exposure to the substances that trigger your hay fever should ease the severity of your symptoms. Follow the advice below to avoid being exposed to excessive amounts of pollen and spores.

  • Avoid cutting grass, playing or walking in grassy areas, and camping.
  • Wear wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes when you are outdoors.
  • Change your clothes and take a shower after being outdoors to remove the pollen on your body.
  • Keep windows and doors shut in the house. If it gets too warm, draw the curtains to keep out the sun and keep the temperature down.
